We write to support the findings and recommendations from the Inquiry into Native Duck Hunting in Victoria. As you know, the campaign to end the recreational shooting of ducks is decades long. Duck and quail shooting was outlawed by Labor Governments in Western Australia in 1990, New South Wales in 1995 and Queensland in 2005. In 6 months over 10,000 submissions from all corners of Victoria were received by the Select Committee, breaking the record for the most submissions ever received by a Parliamentary Inquiry. This demonstrates the strong community sentiment in support of a ban, and the obligation for the Andrews Government to urgently act. Throughout the hearings, evidence of continued cruelty, declining bird populations, the inability of the Game Management Authority to monitor wetlands, and devastating environmental and community impacts was overwhelming. Importantly, the final report determines that duck shooting without wounding simply was not possible, and that no matter how many changes are made to regulation and compliance, our native birds will continue to suffer if duck shooting continues. We urge the government to urgently accept the recommendations from this final report, which unequivocally state that recreational duck and quail shooting must be banned by next year.
