Dear The Honourable Mary-Anne Thomas - Minister for Agriculture,
We, the undersigned, are incredibly distressed by the reports of tens of thousansd of hens killed in a shed fire at Carisbrook.
An urgent investigation must be held to determine how this fire took place, and if it could have been prevented - sparing their lives.
Further, immediate action must be taken on factory farming in Victoria.
Misleading labels such as 'barn-laid' are fooling consumers into buying products that still come from intensive farming.
On top of this, it's clear the national commitment to phase out battery hen farms by 2036 must be fast-tracked. Factory farming has no place in 2022, and it certainly should not continue for another 14 years.
In overseas jurisdictions such as the European Union, this transition has already been completed. They are being phased out in New Zealand by next year, and Canada has also commenced a phase out.
Australia is lagging behind, Victoria must be bold and set a higher standard of animal protection.
